Sunroom or Screened Porch? How to Choose

September 22, 2026 Sands Construction Group

A screened porch and a four-season sunroom can look similar in a sketch, but they live very differently in your house. The right choice comes down to when you want to use the space and what you want to spend.

A screened porch is open to the air. It keeps out mosquitoes and direct sun, and it's wonderful from spring through fall. But it's not insulated, so on the coldest winter days it's still just a covered outdoor space.

A four-season room is built like the rest of your house: insulated floor, walls and roof, energy-efficient windows and its own heating and cooling. It's comfortable in July and January alike and adds real, usable living space — which is why it costs more.

A middle path is a three-season room, with glass or screen panels that can be closed against the weather. And if you already have a screened porch, it can often be converted into a four-season room later, because the footprint and roof are already in place.

Think about use. If it's a place for weekend dinners and evening drinks, a screened porch may be all you need. If you want a home office, a playroom or a reading room, a four-season room earns its price.
